America will issue double H-2B visas for jobs like cook-housekeeper (file photo)
New York Times, Washington. The Trump administration in America has decided to almost double the number of H-2B guest worker visas this year. The government has said that about 65,000 additional H-2B visas will be issued by September. With this, the maximum number of these visas to be issued in a year will effectively double.
The decision comes at a time when President Donald Trump has limited many avenues of legal immigration and is carrying out a large-scale deportation campaign. The strict actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in many cities of America have made the environment even tougher.
However, this step of the Trump administration looks different. The reason for this is believed to be the pressure from the American business class, which has been saying for a long time that there is a dire need for foreign workers for seasonal work. Especially in sectors like landscaping, construction, hotel and hospitality, there is a huge shortage of workers.
The H-2B visa program allows foreign workers to come to the United States for temporary and non-agricultural work. Trump himself has been a regular user of this program. His hotels and private clubs, including Florida's Mar-a-Lago, have previously hired H-2B workers for positions such as cooks, housekeepers and servers.
Generally, the annual legal limit for H-2B visas is 66,000. But when applications exceed this limit, the government has been approving additional visas. After Trump came to power again, it was not clear whether additional visas would be available this time too, so industry organizations put pressure on the government to take a quick decision.
The National Association of Landscape Professionals said the U.S. economy needs more legal workers in a timely manner. According to the organization, if seasonal industries do not get adequate workers, their operations could be seriously affected.
