Jagran correspondent, Amritsar. This sensitive matter of 328 forms of Sri Guru Granth Sahib going missing or there being irregularities in the records will now be investigated by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
This episode related to religious faith has created a stir not only in Amritsar but in the entire state. Amid increasing pressure and demand for an impartial investigation, the Punjab Bureau of Investigation has constituted a high-level SIT. AIG (Vigilance) SAS Nagar Mohali Jagatpreet Singh has been made the chairman of the SIT. Senior police officers from Amritsar, Patiala and Ludhiana have been included in the team.
The SIT will work under the direct supervision of Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar. If necessary, additional officers can also be included in the investigation.
According to police officials, the SIT will thoroughly investigate the maintenance of 328 forms, their transfer, records and the role of the responsible officers. It will also be seen whether this lapse is administrative negligence or there is some organized conspiracy behind it. In fact, in 2015-2016, 328 holy forms went missing from the publication department of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. After this a controversy arose in the Sikh community.
The hospitality committee also staged a protest in the corridor of Sri Harmandir Sahib for four years in protest against this matter and demanded an impartial investigation into the matter. At that time a huge difference was found in the number of forms of Sri Granth Sahib. After matching the numbers recorded in the registers and the forms present on the spot, 328 forms were found missing.
Neither was any clear record of their safe transfer found nor could it be known on whose instructions and where these forms were taken. Considering the seriousness of the matter, FIR number 168 was registered in Police Station C Division on 7 December 2025. 16 employees of SGPC were nominated in this.
Police believe that this may not only be a matter of negligence but also a case of well-planned conspiracy and manipulation of records. During the investigation started at the local level after the FIR, as the facts came to light, the matter became more sensitive.
Anger spread among Sikh Sangat and religious organizations. Voices started being raised continuously demanding an impartial and high-level investigation. Calling it a matter directly related to faith and dignity, the Sangat demanded strict action against those responsible.
Considering the seriousness and social impact of the case, the Bureau of Investigation, Punjab constituted the SIT. However, SGPC has opposed this FIR.
Sri Akal Takht Sahib's Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gadgaj and SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami are calling it politically motivated.
Also said that SGPC is capable of investigating its internal affairs. There should not have been any kind of political and police interference.Nitin Dhiman
