Digital Desk, New Delhi. A 31-member joint committee has been formed under the chairmanship of BJP member Dr. Purandeshwari to examine the Vikas Bharat Education Foundation (VBSA) Bill. Through this, efforts are made to establish higher education regulator.

According to a notification issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Tuesday, this committee is composed of members of both the Houses and before submitting its report, this committee will examine the provisions of the proposed law. The VBSA Bill, introduced during the winter session, seeks to reform the higher education regulatory framework, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The proposed legislation aims to replace multiple existing regulators with a single overall body and provide for separation of accreditation, financing and standard setting functions. Rajya Sabha members include Surendra Singh Nagar (BJP), Sudhanshu Trivedi (BJP), Pradeep Kumar Verma (BJD), Meena Kumari Jain (BJP), Digvijay Singh (Congress), Sagarika Ghosh (Trinamool Congress), Sasmit Patra (BJD), M. Thambidurai (AIADMK), Sanjay Kumar Jha (JDU) and Ram Gopal Yadav (SP).

Lok Sabha members include Dr. Purandeshwari (BJP), Bharatruhari Mahtab (BJP), Sambit Patra (BJP), Tejashwi Surya (BJP), Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Bansuri Swaraj (BJP), Vivek Thakur (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Brijmohan Agarwal (BJP), Varsha Eknath Gaikwad (Congress), Angomcha Bimol Akoizam (Congress), Vamsi Krishna Gaddam (Congress), ET Mohammad Bashir (IUML), Lalji Verma (SP), Saugata Roy (Trinamool Congress), TR Baalu (DMK), Sribharat Mathukumili (TDP) and Alok Kumar Suman (JDU).

The government had stated that it intended to send the Bill to the Joint Committee for broader consultation, as concerns were raised by the opposition parties on issues related to federalism, institutional autonomy and centralization of powers. The joint committee is expected to invite suggestions from all stakeholders, including state governments and academic bodies, before formulating final recommendations.
