Government's strict stance on online harassment, deepfakes

Digital Desk, New Delhi. The government has taken a stricter stance, taking note of the increasing misuse of various digital platforms, including internet media and dating applications. The Ministry of Women and Child Development is working in close coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to combat online gender violence.

This includes identity theft, misuse of fake profiles, dissemination of pornographic content, non-consensual intimate images (NCII) and deepfakes, which is being addressed through inter-ministerial consultation, advice, regulatory measures and victim assistance mechanism.

Minister of State for Women and Child Development Savitri Thakur told the Rajya Sabha that under Mission Shakti, a holistic and victim-centric approach has been adopted to enhance the safety, security and empowerment of women, including protection from technology-related crimes.

Victims of cyber harassment are provided integrated services such as legal aid, counseling and facility to lodge complaints through one stop centers set up across the country. Under the Nirbhaya Fund, the government has implemented the Cyber ​​Crime Prevention Against Women and Children (CCPWC) scheme.

A dedicated cyber crime reporting portal and a national helpline 1930 are functional, while the Ministry of Home Affairs continues to conduct awareness campaigns about cyber crimes and available redressal mechanisms through social and other media platforms.

The minister said the Information Technology Act, 2000 provides the statutory basis for action against cyber crimes. The Act is technology-neutral and applies to all computer resources, including resources that use Artificial Intelligence (AI).
