Kumar Sanjay, New Delhi. While medicines can provide relief from many diseases, they can also have side effects. Many such things have come to light in a study conducted by the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Unit of SGPGI Hospital Administration Department of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Medical Institute, Lucknow.
According to Dr. Shalini Trivedi, who is part of the research team, monitoring of patients is necessary while giving microbial, TV and cancer medicines so that these side effects can be identified in time and the treatment can be made safe.
Let us tell you that this research is based on the analysis of cases registered in the Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Unit of the institute during the year 2024 (January to December). A total of 213 adverse drug reaction cases were recorded in the study. Increasing awareness among youth
The study also revealed that the highest number of cases of side effects from medicines were recorded in patients in the age group of 20 to 30 years. The main reason for this is considered to be the increasing awareness about health among the youth, who immediately inform the doctors or health workers about the problems they face after taking medicines, whereas the people of older age group often ignore the side effects considering them normal, and giving medicines without keeping the allergies in mind, which can make the situation serious. It is a major cause of side effects.
adverse effect on digestive system
It was also found in the said study that there is a higher risk of side effects from medicines given intravenously. Skin and skin related problems such as rashes, itching and allergies were reported in 35 percent of the cases, while stomach and digestive system related problems such as vomiting, diarrhea and stomach pain were reported in about 30 percent of the cases.
Common causes of side effects
Giving medicine without taking into account age, weight, kidney-liver function, chronic diseases and allergies is a major cause of side effects. The dosage of every medicine is fixed. Taking more than this dose can cause side effects like vomiting, dizziness, lethargy, falling blood pressure, effect on kidney or liver. Many patients take several medicines at the same time or get treatment from different doctors. This can also cause reactions between medications. This risk is higher in admitted patients, because they are given injections, antibiotics, painkillers and other medicines simultaneously.
Not taking medicine on time, leaving medicine midway, changing the dose yourself, taking old medicine again or taking medicine from others. Taking medicines brought from home by admitted patients or their family members without prior advice can also be dangerous. If after taking the medicine you experience severe itching, difficulty in breathing, swelling of the face or lips, excessive sleep, confusion, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, less urination or rashes on the skin, then do not ignore it. Patients undergoing treatment at home should immediately contact the doctor and admitted patients should inform the nurse or doctor without delay.
