Rakesh Sharma was born on January 13, 1949 in Patiala, Punjab. He completed his early education from Hyderabad. After this, he joined the National Defense Academy as an Air Force cadet in July 1966. Rakesh Sharma was appointed as a pilot in the Indian Air Force in the year 1970. He flew MiG-21 in the 1971 war and carried out dangerous missions.

Took training to go to space

Rakesh Sharma was greatly influenced by Yuri Gagarin's space travel since his school days. Influenced by Gagarin, he decided to join NDA and received rigorous training in NDA. Becoming an astronaut was not at all easy for him. For this he worked hard day and night and was selected as an astronaut under the Soviet Inter Cosmos Program in the year 1982.

Rakesh Sharma's real struggle began then. When he was sent for training at the Yuri Gagarin Centre. He learned Russian in two months and conducted a total of 43 space experiments, including the effects of yoga and photography of India.
