Through stolen mobile phones, criminals are accessing bank accounts and wiping out people's years' worth of savings in minutes. Statistics show that in the last five years, about Rs 380 crore has been looted through mobile theft and digital fraud related to it.
Banking apps become the easiest target after phone theft
For cyber criminals, a stolen mobile is no less than a treasure. Through the banking app, OTP, e-mail and UPI access present in the phone, criminals directly gain access to the accounts. In many cases, the victim does not realize until the account is completely emptied.
The pace of digital fraud is increasing every year
If we look at the statistics, the cases of mobile theft and digital fraud are increasing every year. A sharp increase has been recorded in the cases of mobile theft from 2021 to 2025. Along with this, the amount of fraud has also increased manifold. In the year 2025 alone, fraud of more than Rs 147 crore has come to light.

According to experts, youth and working people in urban areas are becoming the biggest victims. Overdependence on online payments, mobile banking and social media has become an opportunity for criminals. Crowded areas, bus stands, railway stations and markets have become hotspots for mobile theft.

According to the police and cyber cell, in most of the cases fraud is not happening because of the network but due to the digital carelessness of the people. The phone not being locked, auto-login to the app, password being saved and the SIM not being locked makes the work of criminals easier.

The increasing cases have increased the concern of the police and cyber cell. Tracking a stolen mobile, reaching out to the criminals after changing the SIM and recovering the defrauded amount has become a big challenge. However, the police claim that efforts are on to control it through technical surveillance and awareness campaigns.

Cyber experts say that in case of mobile theft, it is very important to immediately block the SIM, inform the bank and lodge a complaint in the cyber police station. Additionally, strong lock in mobile, two-step verification and additional security in banking apps have become necessary.
