Religion Desk, New Delhi. Bhishma Pitamah of Mahabharata followed celibacy throughout his life, hence he had no children of his own who could offer him tarpan. The scriptures say that since he dedicated his life to protect the entire society and religion. Therefore, every person in the society can offer water to him to express his gratitude towards him.

Why is it important for everyone, married and unmarried?

Generally, the rules of tarpan in Hindu religion are quite strict, but special relaxation has been given in the tarpan done for Bhishma Pitamah:

Freedom from Pitra Dosh: It is believed that by giving water to Bhishma Pitamah, the ancestors are pleased. If there is Pitra Dosh in your horoscope or progress in the family is stalled, then this 'Ek Anjali Jal' can open your doors.

For the unmarried: Since Bhishma himself was a 'Naishtika Brahmachari', unmarried youths can also offer him water so that they get determination and good character in life.

For the happiness of children: It is believed that couples who are facing obstacles in conceiving a child, must observe fast and make offerings on Bhishma Ashtami.

The process is very easy and you can do it at home or by a river:

Take pure water in a copper or silver vessel.

Add some Ganga water, milk, honey and black sesame seeds to it.

Face the south direction and fill water with your palms and slowly drop it into the vessel and meditate on Grandfather Bhishma.

During this time, remember this mantra: "Vaiyaghrapadagotraaya sankrityapravaraya ca, aputraaya dadamitasalilam bhishmavarmane.", meaning- I offer this water to Bhishma.
