Key associate of Chhangur, leader of conversion gang in Uttar Pradesh, arrested in Nagpur (symbolic picture)
PTI, Nagpur. In a joint operation of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh ATS, a key associate of conversion gang leader Chhangur was arrested in Nagpur on Saturday morning.
Chhangur Baba alias Jalaluddin and his associates are being questioned by the Uttar Pradesh ATS in Lucknow in connection with the FIR registered under the Indian Justice Code and Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, while the ED is investigating the money laundering aspect of his activities.
Idhu Islam, who played a key role in the money management of Chhangur's network, was arrested from Aashi Nagar under Pachpaoli police station area, an official said. According to the officer, Islam is wanted in serious cases registered in Uttar Pradesh. There was an arrest warrant against him.
He said that to avoid worsening of law and order situation, action was taken with utmost caution in a narrow lane of Ashi Nagar. Our team arrested the accused without any resistance.
An Uttar Pradesh Police official said that he had been evading arrest for the last few years. His arrest was based on intelligence information. The officer said that Chhangur had strong contacts in Nagpur many years ago.
After this he came to Uttar Pradesh and established a well-organized network to conduct religious conversion and other illegal activities. Police allege that Chhangur organized conversion of people from Hindu and other non-Muslim communities to Islam.
The target of this gang was poor laborers, widows and vulnerable people, who were forced to convert to Islam by cajoling or giving financial inducements. He was arrested on July 5 last year from Madhapur village in Balrampur district of Uttar Pradesh.
In this case registered at the ATS police station in Gomtinagar, Lucknow, charges have been leveled under sections 121A (waging war against the state), 153A (promoting enmity), 417 (fraud), 420 (forgery) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act.
