Legal blow to Trump administration's decision
Digital Desk, New Delhi. A US federal judge on Friday ordered the Trump administration to end the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles. The decision is a strong legal blow to Trump's efforts to militarize Democratic-held areas.
In June this year, soldiers were deployed on the streets of Los Angeles for the first time. This decision was taken by Trump to send 4,000 State National Guard Reserve soldiers to suppress the protests against immigration raid.
Federal judge orders end of deployment in Los Angeles
Local leaders said that the smaller protests (which affected only a few blocks in America's second-largest metropolis) could have been easily handled by city, county and state law enforcement. He also accused Trump of authoritarian arbitrariness.
Although many soldiers have now been demobilized following the court order, the US Army says that 100 Guard soldiers are still deployed.
Governor Newsom calls federalization illegal
In his ruling Wednesday, Senior U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said control of federalized National Guard troops should return to California Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom welcomed the judge's decision.
"Today's decision makes it clear that federalization of the National Guard in California is illegal and must end," he said. “We expect all National Guard service members to be returned to state service.”
Justice Department lawyers had argued that troops who were federalized would remain under the president's command for as long as he wished. The Breyer decision rejected this argument.
