Approval given to the free cylinder scheme in the Delhi Cabinet meeting.
PTI, New Delhi. Delhi government is preparing to provide free LPG cylinders to women of economically weaker section (EWS) on the occasion of upcoming Holi. According to government sources, this proposal has been approved in the Delhi Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday.
Sources said that women from EWS families who have ration cards will be provided one free gas cylinder each on the occasion of Holi and Diwali. Apart from this, a scheme to provide subsidized cylinders for Rs 500 to economically weaker families will also be implemented.
Expenditure may be up to Rs 300 crore
According to government sources, the government may have to bear additional expenditure of about Rs 300 crore on this scheme. The objective of the scheme is to provide relief to poor and needy women struggling with the burden of inflation.
Part of BJP's election promise
The announcement of providing free gas cylinders to EWS women has been an important part of the BJP's election manifesto for the Delhi Assembly elections. The party had promised that free cylinders will be provided on Holi and Diwali, while gas cylinders will be provided to needy families for Rs 500 throughout the year.
Chief Minister's promise - "All announcements will be fulfilled"
It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while campaigning during the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by-elections in November last year, had said that her government would fulfill all the promises including monthly assistance of Rs 2,500 and subsidized gas cylinders to poor women.
He said, the BJP government has so far fulfilled some of its major election promises. These include the implementation of the central government's Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in Delhi and the launch of Atal canteens to provide food to the needy at Rs 5.
Government sources say that the process of formally implementing the free gas cylinder scheme will soon be started, so that its benefits can be extended to eligible women before Holi.
