Change date of confirmed ticket without cancellation charge
Digital Desk, New Delhi. Indian Railways keeps making necessary changes from time to time keeping in mind the convenience of the passengers. Now on the new year 2026, Indian Railways is going to provide great facilities to the passengers. Railway passengers will now be able to change the date of their confirmed ticket online, that too without any cancellation fee or additional charges.
Actually, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had given information about this in an interview given to NDTV on October 7. He had told that at present, to change the date, one has to cancel the ticket and book a new one, in which huge clerkage charges are deducted. In the new system, passengers will be able to postpone the date directly on the IRCTC app or website. For this you will not have to pay any cancellation charge.
However, if you book a seat on a new date after the confirmed ticket, then the confirmed seat will not be guaranteed, the berth will be given only on the basis of availability. If the fare on the new date is higher, the difference will have to be paid, but if it is lower, you will get a refund.
Suppose if you have a confirmed ticket from Delhi to Indore and the plan is for 25th December, then you will be able to travel on the same ticket by changing the date without canceling the old ticket. The most important thing is that this facility will be applicable on e-tickets.
what is the old rule
According to the old rule, if you change the date of your ticket booking, you have to first cancel your ticket and book a fresh ticket for the next date. There is also a charge for canceling the ticket and there is no guarantee whether a confirmed ticket will be available on the next date or not.
When will the new rule come into effect
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, the new rule is in the interest of passengers and this feature will come on the IRCTC website or app from January 2026. After the update of the new system, you will get the option of rebooking once the ticket is confirmed. You will be able to select a new date of travel in the same train. Based on seat availability, a new ticket will be generated for you without any cancellation fee.
This new rule of Railways will be applicable only on confirmed tickets. There is no new rule yet for changing the date of waiting ticket.
