A joint team of doctors and researchers from the country's leading institutes IIT BHU, AIIMS New Delhi and National Institute of Immunology have discovered a new active molecule named 'I-43'. It will go inside the brain to identify the factors causing this disease and prevent and eliminate them.
Clinical trials will start
Experts claim that 'I-43' can do both testing and treatment simultaneously. This is the reason why it is being considered a promising discovery for the future in the treatment of Alzheimer's. This research has been published prominently in the prestigious international medical journal Nature Communications. A patent has also been filed by the researcher for the discovery of this active molecule. Clinical trials will start after necessary formalities and permission.

Normally there is a protective layer around the brain, called the blood-brain barrier. Many medicines are unable to cross this barrier, but 'I 43' crosses this barrier and directly affects the brain.
Help in early detection of disease
In Alzheimer's, the harmful substance (enzyme) called 'amyloid-beta plaque' deposited in the brain destroys the important chemical called 'acetylcholine' present there, due to which the memory starts weakening. I-43 helps in early detection of disease by identifying this enzyme. Not only this, I-43 is also capable of preventing and eliminating the harmful enzyme which destroys the essential chemical called acetylcholine.
Big step in the treatment of Alzheimer's
Acetylcholine is essential for memory and thinking ability. By stopping its destruction, Alzheimer's can be easily controlled. This achievement, based entirely on indigenous research, will bring global recognition to India's scientific capability and after further trials, it can prove to be a major step towards effective treatment of Alzheimer's.

In common language, Alzheimer's is also called the disease of amnesia (memory loss). According to medical experts, Alzheimer's is actually a common type of dementia (brain impairment). In this, along with memory, the ability to think, take decisions, recognize, speak and understand is affected. Due to this, the ability to work gradually diminishes.
