State Bureau, Patna. An average challan of Rs 6 crore is being issued every month through the e-detection system installed on the National Highway (NH) passing through Bihar.

Automatic e-challan is being issued if the fitness, insurance and pollution certificates of vehicles passing through the toll plaza are not updated.

Till now 32 toll plazas in the state were equipped with e-detection, soon 9 more toll plazas will be equipped with e-detection. The Transport Department has started preparations for this.

The Transport Department had started the process of issuing challans through e-detection system at toll plazas in the state in August 2024.

According to the data, 1 lakh 49 thousand 490 challans have been issued at toll plazas till September 2025, under which a fine of about Rs 80 crore has been imposed on vehicle owners. In this, only about one fourth of the challan has been deposited.

The Transport Department has identified the drivers who have not deposited the challan and directed all District Transport Officers (DTOs) to take action.

This is how e-detection system works

This system is connected with the technical support of the nationally run National Informatics Center (NIC), which is integrated with the central database of vehicle registration and related documents. As soon as a vehicle passes through the toll plaza, its number plate or Fastag is scanned by cameras.

After this, by matching with the relevant database, it is verified whether all the necessary documents of the vehicle are valid or not. If the documents are not found updated, e-challan is automatically issued under the relevant provisions.
