AP, London. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer apologized to victims on Thursday for appointing Peter Mandelson as Britain's ambassador to Washington despite his ties to Jeffrey Epstein. He said Mendelson lied and presented Epstein as someone he barely knew.

"I'm sorry for what happened to you, I'm sorry that so many powerful people let you down," he told the victims. "I'm sorry that I believed Mendelson's lies and hired him, and I'm sorry that you're still forced to watch this story play out in public once again."

Starmer had appointed Mendelson as ambassador to the US in 2024. The Prime Minister fired him in September after the emails were published, revealing that he remained friends with Epstein even after he was convicted in 2008 of sexually abusing a minor. Epstein committed suicide in prison in 2019.

Increasing pressure on the Prime Minister

PM Starmer never met Epstein and there are no allegations against him. But Mandelson is facing pressure from within her own ruling Labor Party after Mandelson's close ties to Epstein came to light. Critics believe this is a mistake that could threaten Starmer's position.
