Anup Kumar Singh, New Delhi. Pain in the knees while climbing stairs, constant stiffness in the waist and fear of breaking a bone with the slightest stumble. It has been believed that all this is natural after menopause, but AIIMS drew attention to new aspects to solve this problem.

According to this new study, this pain and weakness in bones is not just due to lack of hormones, its real root lies in the intestines. After menopause, when estrogen hormone decreases in the body, it affects the immune system of the intestine. This increases swelling in the intestines, this swelling gradually hollows out the bones and weakens them. Related research has shown that probiotic bacteria like 'Lactobacillus acidophilus' (good bacteria, which keeps the intestines healthy and improves digestion) are helpful in controlling this process.

Risk of fracture may be reduced

This research was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Rupesh Kumar Srivastava, Additional Professor, Translation Osteoimmunology and Immunoporosis Lab of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Dr. Rupesh Kumar Srivastava explains that due to uncontrolled inflammation in the intestine, the body is unable to stop the process of bone erosion. Even a minor injury or fall increases the risk of fracture, but if intestinal inflammation is controlled, the process of bone breakdown can be effectively stopped.

Something similar happens in cases of osteoporosis also. He has named it immunoporosis i.e. immunology of osteoporosis. In this way, in future, the treatment of osteoporosis will not be limited to only calcium, hormones or medicines. Gut microbiome and immune balance will also become an important link in its treatment. According to Dr. Rupesh Srivastava, probiotics improve the balance of immune cells in the intestine. If we keep the intestines healthy, its effect will also be visible on bones, immunity and overall health.
