Jagran correspondent, Dehradun. Nehru Colony police station has arrested the mastermind of the gang that defrauded a retired Subedar and others of Rs 1.20 crore by promising them jobs abroad. The accused has been identified as Upendra Singh Thapa, resident of Mohkampur, currently resident of Hydel Colony, Haldwani. Five accused are still absconding in this case, police action is underway to arrest them. Four of these accused are relatives of Upendra Singh Thapa.

On July 29, 2025, retired Subedar Narjang Kumar resident of Deep Niwas, Naya Nagar, District Solan (Himachal Pradesh) gave a complaint that Subedar Sandeep Thapa resident of Nehru Colony was also in the army with him. Sandeep Thapa told him that his relative Upendra Singh Thapa, who is a captain in the merchant navy, could get him a job in Finland. Rs 10 lakh will have to be paid for this.

After this, Sandeep Thapa made him and Aseem Thapa, Ashwani Kumar, Vikas Thapa meet Upendra Singh Thapa. Sandeep Thapa told him that in exchange for getting a job abroad in Finland, he would have to pay Rs 10 lakh each. Out of this, Rs 5 lakh each was asked in advance so that the visa process could start.

The victim told that believing the words of Sandeep Thapa and Upendra Singh Thapa, he gave Rs 1.20 crore on different dates. Accused Upendra Singh Thapa and Sandeep Thapa told him and others including Aseem Thapa, Ashwani Kumar and Vikas Thapa that it would take 30 to 45 days to get the work permit. On June 28, 2024, Upendra Thapa and Sandeep Thapa called everyone to Dehradun and gave them the contract letter of Finland.

In February 2025, he received a mail, which revealed that his visa was not granted and the accused had given him fake documents. In this case, Nehru Colony police station registered a case against the accused Sandeep Thapa, Upendra Thapa, Surendra Thapa, Saroj Thapa, Deepti Thapa and Raksha Dashila on July 29. Police station head Nehru Colony Sanjeet Kumar said that on Saturday, under the supervision of outpost in-charge Jogiwala Vijay Pratap Rahi, the team arrested the accused Upendra Thapa from Dehradun.
