America's big revelation on China's secret nuclear weapons expansion (file photo)
Digital Desk, New Delhi. The US has accused China of secretly increasing its nuclear weapons stockpile on a large scale. America claims that China can match the top powers in terms of nuclear capacity in a few years.
In fact, after the last major nuclear treaty 'New START' between Russia and the US expired, the Trump administration has now stressed the need for a comprehensive agreement including China.
The US says there is a possibility of reaching a better deal by including China after the New START treaty (the last treaty between top nuclear powers like the US and Russia) expired earlier this month. However, China has clearly refused to be a part of any such trilateral talks.
Serious flaws in 'New Start' treaty
Christopher Yew, assistant secretary of arms control and non-proliferation at the US State Department, told the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva that the 'New START' treaty had serious flaws. "Perhaps its biggest flaw was that the New START agreement did not take into account China's unprecedented, deliberate, rapid and opaque build-up of nuclear weapons," he said.
China will catch up with us in the next four-five years
Christopher Yew alleged "Contrary to its claims, China has deliberately and without restraint, without transparency or any indication of China's intentions or ultimate goals, massively expanded its nuclear arsenal. We believe China can achieve parity within the next four or five years," although he did not clarify what he meant by parity.
the situation is really serious
Christopher Yew stressed, "The expiration of the treaty and the absence of any nuclear arms control treaty currently does not mean that the United States is retreating from or ignoring arms control. On the contrary, the situation is indeed serious. Our goal is to reach a better agreement toward a world without nuclear weapons."
According to the Nobel Peace Prize-winning campaign group ICAN, both Russia and the United States have more than 5,000 nuclear weapons. But the New START treaty, which expired on Feb. 5, limited the United States and Russia to 1,550 deployable nuclear weapons each. This is a number which Washington says China is rapidly approaching.
