Ramesh Chandra, Nainital. The rings of Saturn originated from the collision of two of its satellites. The debris scattered by the collision made Saturn attractive by taking the form of rings. Saturn's rings are still young, about 100 million years old.
The secret of the origin of Saturn's rings has come to light through recent joint research by scientists from America's South West Research Institute (SWRI), California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and France's Observatory de Paris.
Dr. Shashibhushan Pandey, senior astronomer of Aryabhatta Observational Science Research Institute (ARIES) said that Saturn, the second largest planet of our solar system, looks very beautiful covered in silver sheet.
The extremely shiny rings further enhance its beauty. Now new research has come to light regarding the origin of its rings.
Which shows that the rings of Saturn originated due to the collision of the satellite Titan and Proto Hyperion.
This collision would have been so severe that one satellite Proto Hyperion broke and completely disintegrated. Whose debris went on to form the rings of Saturn. Some part of the debris also got attached to the satellite Titan.
Scientists from America and France believe that the Titan satellite has also suffered major impacts from objects in the past. There must have been large craters in it, which were filled after the collision and the size of Titan also increased.
Currently, Titan is the largest satellite of Saturn. The tilt of Saturn was also affected by this collision and it reached 26.7 degrees. Whereas the Earth is tilted in its axis by about 23.5 degrees.
The rings of Saturn are spread over a diameter of 2.7 lakh km.
According to Dr. Shashibhushan Pandey, the diameter of the rings of Saturn extends to about 2.7 lakh kilometers. Their thickness ranges from 10 to 100 meters.
Some are considered to be up to one kilometer long. These rings are made of ice. In which dust, particles and organic matter are present. Its rings are gradually falling on Saturn in the form of ring rain, which may disappear in the future.
