China taking advantage of US research on nuclear technology: Report
Digital Desk, New Delhi. China is taking advantage of US-funded research on nuclear technology. This has come to light in a parliamentary report published on Wednesday.
It says China is taking advantage of partnerships with US researchers funded by the Energy Department to give its military access to sensitive nuclear technology and other innovations related to economic and national security.
The report said the US should do more to protect high-tech research. It must also ensure that actions taken with taxpayer money do not benefit Beijing.
The investigation is part of an effort by Congress to create a safeguard to prevent US research from fueling China's military buildup. The two countries are engaged in a technological and arms rivalry that will shape the future global order.
Investigators from the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce identified more than 4,300 academic papers published from June 2023 to June this year that involved collaborations between scientists and Chinese researchers funded by the Department of Education.
About half of these papers were contributed by Chinese researchers affiliated with China's military or industrial base. The Energy Department did not respond to questions about the report and its recommendations.
