Balwan Kariwal, Chandigarh. On the lines of cities, now schools will also be given ranking after evaluation based on the standards of cleanliness. Just as the Central Ministry team gives the score after ground survey of the cities, in the same way the Municipal Corporation will give the ranking after surveying the schools. Every year it will be decided which school has been the cleanest school in the city.

Schools will be assessed on parameters such as visual cleanliness of the premises, garbage segregation, waste management, condition of toilets, IEC activities and environmental sustainability. Photographic evidence, on-site composting and plastic-free premises will play an important role in scoring.

With the aim of strengthening cleanliness habits in the city from childhood and giving a new direction to the cleanliness movement, the Municipal Corporation started the Swachh School Ranking Initiative. This citywide program will be organized from February 3 to 15, in which cleanliness, sanitation and hygiene will be promoted in government and private schools.

This initiative was launched by Mayor Saurabh Joshi during the Swachh School Orientation Program organized at Rani Lakshmi Bai Mahila Bhawan Sector-38 as part of the preparations for Swachh Survekshan. The Mayor said that schools are the foundation of a clean and responsible society. Cleanliness habits start from school itself. When children learn the values of cleanliness and sustainability at an early age, they pass these on to their home and society.

This initiative will play an important role in achieving Mission Chandigarh Number One. Education Secretary Prerna Puri said that clean, safe and hygienic school environment is essential for effective education. He encouraged schools to adopt initiatives like eco-clubs, RRR centers and rain water harvesting.

Through the Swachh School Ranking initiative, the Municipal Corporation is not only evaluating the infrastructure but also developing behaviour, responsibility and environmental awareness among the children. -Saurabh Joshi, Mayor, Chandigarh.
