Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. In the meeting of the Standing Committee on Academic Matters of Delhi University held on Monday, there was an extensive discussion regarding amendments in some optional subjects of the postgraduate course (PG). The meeting was held to consider the courses proposed for the second semester under the PG Curriculum Framework (PGCF).
During the meeting, objections came to light regarding some optional subjects of economics and history. In particular, differences of opinion were seen in the committee on the proposal to include topics like domestic violence, partner violence, workplace violence and crimes against women under Unit-3 in the optional subject of 'Economics and Gender'.
Some members argued that these topics are not directly related to economics. However, a member of the committee said that the Head of the Department of Economics clarified that there is extensive research and theoretical literature available on the economic cost, development and impact of violence against women on the national economy. He said that this subject is an important area of economic study.
Even during the discussion on the syllabus of History subject, some members raised questions on the excessive importance given to global history. During this period, a proposal was also made to remove some works like Shirin Moosvi's book 'Work and Gender in Mughal India' from the syllabus.
It is noteworthy that the preliminary syllabus is prepared by the committee of the concerned departments, which is sent to the Academic Council for approval through the Standing Committee. These proposals are under the PGCF implemented under the National Education Policy-2020 and are being made in line with the new undergraduate curriculum framework. This is the first year that students are studying under this new system and now they are going to enter the second semester.
