Jagran correspondent, Shimla. The debate regarding the proposed new electricity rates in Himachal Pradesh has intensified. The final public hearing on the petition filed for rescheduling of electricity rates in the state will be held on February 24 in Dharamshala. Earlier, hearing of domestic consumers in Shimla and industrial consumers in Baddi has been completed. Now after the hearing to be held in Dharamshala, the Regulatory Commission will take the final decision on the new rates.

There is dissatisfaction among consumers regarding the possible increase in electricity rates. During the hearing held in Shimla, domestic consumers demanded not to increase the rates. He says that in this era of inflation, the additional burden of electricity bills can create problems for ordinary families.

Industrial units in Baddi also protested against the increase in rates. Industrialists argue that increasing electricity rates will increase production costs, which will impact competition and may affect investment.

Electricity Board has filed a petition

In fact, Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited has filed a petition in the Regulatory Commission for revision of rates citing increasing demand for electricity and operating costs. The board says that the expenditure on power generation, purchase and distribution is continuously increasing, hence adjustment in rates is necessary to maintain financial balance. Himachal Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission is hearing this petition.

New rates will be applicable from April

The new rates decided by the Commission are proposed to be implemented from April 1 of the next financial year. Therefore, this hearing is considered important, because only on its basis it will be decided at what rates consumers will get electricity from next year.

February 24 hearing important

Various consumer sections, industry representatives and common citizens are likely to present their views in the final hearing to be held in Dharamshala. The Commission will give the final decision on the rates after hearing all the parties. Now all eyes of the state are on the hearing on February 24, where it will be decided whether electricity consumers will get relief or will have to face an increase in rates.
