Jagran correspondent, Dehradun. The court on Tuesday acquitted the accused in the case of death of two youths when their car overturned due to drunkenness and speed on Rajpur Road. The incident happened seven years ago. Important witnesses in this case turned hostile from their statements in the court. Due to this, the court of Fourth Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Ramesh Chandra acquitted the main accused Rohit alias Chinu of all charges.
Had gone out partying at Maggi Point
According to the prosecution, this incident occurred on December 9, 2018. Rohit had gone to party at a Maggi point on Mussoorie Road with his four friends Rishabh, Anil, Neeraj and Aditi Negi. The girl in the car had initially told that she had consumed alcohol at the party and Rohit was driving very fast under the influence of alcohol. Local people who reached the spot said that the music system of the car was playing very loudly and there was a strong smell of liquor coming from inside the car. The car collided with something near the Sai temple and overturned, due to which it was completely damaged. Anil and Neeraj died during treatment in this accident.
Prosecution's case overturned due to eyewitnesses' U-turn
Aditi Negi, who was present in the car at the time of the incident, while testifying in the court clearly said that Rohit was not driving the car. Said that he had not given any statement to the police. While a local resident was called an eyewitness by the police, he also said in cross-examination that he was not present at the spot. The court said that if the main eyewitness refuses to identify the accused and who was driving the vehicle, then no one can be punished on the basis of mere suspicion.
