Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. The Standing Committee of Delhi University (DU) has sent back the additional elective courses proposed for the second semester of the two-year postgraduate program for revision after reviewing them. The committee particularly objected to the Economics and Gender elective course of the Economics Department.

Committee members said that this course includes topics like domestic violence, workplace violence and crimes against women, which are not related to economics. Also, some courses are not organized properly. Dhanpal Singh, Associate Professor of Keshav Mahavidyalaya, said that there was especially objection to the presentation of Unit 3 Crime and Gender.

Associate Professor of Kamala Nehru College. Monami Sinha defended the course, saying that women's workforce participation in India is the lowest in the world and social beliefs, domestic violence and security concerns are the major reasons for this.

Despite this, the members who raised objections remained adamant on their point, after which the course was sent back for revision. On behalf of the History Department, courses for the second semester were also presented in the meeting, to which objections were raised saying that the syllabus is more focused on global history rather than Indian history.

The Head of the Department replied that if we take the entire program together, about 70 percent of the syllabus is related to Indian History and only 30 percent is related to World History. He said that study of global history is necessary in any history department.

Apart from this, objection was also raised regarding the word society in the Themes in Ancient Indian Economy and Society course. Subsequently several textbooks were removed from the curriculum, including books by Shirin Mousavi, Indrani Chatterjee and Richard Eaton. The committee has now directed both the departments to revise their syllabus and re-submit it.
