Launch of Center of Excellence.

Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. This is an important step towards making policy and regulatory decisions more practical and robust in the country's rapidly changing power sector. Union Power Minister Manohar Lal on Monday launched the Center of Excellence for Regulatory Affairs in the Power Sector at IIT Delhi. This center has been established as a joint initiative of IIT Delhi, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and Grid Controller of India Limited (Grid India).

This initiative comes at a time when power demand in the country is continuously increasing, large-scale integration of renewable energy is taking place and the scope of power markets is expanding rapidly. Also, the increasing use of digital technology has made the power sector more complex. In such a situation, this center will strengthen India's regulatory capacity as well as establish better coordination between policy and operation.

The Center of Excellence is being developed as a national platform for regulatory research, capacity building, advisory support and knowledge dissemination. Its objective is to bring policy, regulation, system operations and academic research into a shared institutional framework, so that decisions can be taken evidence-based and with a long-term view.

Speaking at the inauguration, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal said that strong and knowledge-based regulation is essential for India moving towards clean energy, competitive markets and consumer-centric reforms. He said that this center will play an important role in creating a visionary and informed regulatory framework.

Director of IIT Delhi, Prof. Rangan Banerjee called it an important initiative towards making the energy sector affordable, sustainable and future ready. At the same time, CERC Chairman Jishnu Barua said that this center will strengthen evidence-based policy making. Grid India Chairman and MD SC Saxena stressed that the need of the hour is to align the regulatory framework with the realities of grid operation.

The center will conduct multidisciplinary research on emerging technologies such as electricity regulation, market design, grid operation, energy transition, decarbonization, digitalization, energy storage, demand response and green hydrogen. It is believed that this cooperation will prove to be decisive in making India's power sector strong, efficient and future-ready.
