Fear of Anil Ambani fleeing the country! Supreme Court directs CBI-ED to conduct impartial investigation, what is the matter?

Agency, New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Wednesday expressed displeasure over the unreasonable delay in the investigation of the alleged Rs 40,000 crore banking and corporate fraud case involving Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG) and Anil Ambani. The Supreme Court has directed CBI and ED to conduct a fair and speedy investigation.

Former bureaucrat EAS Sarma, who filed the PIL, expressed the fear of Anil Ambani leaving the country. On this, senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Ambani, assured that he would not leave the country without the prior permission of the court.

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul M Pancholi sought a fresh status report within four weeks from the CBI and ED on the progress made in the ongoing investigation against Ambani and ADAG companies. The bench directed the ED to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate against ADAG and others.

There is a case of fraud of Rs 40 thousand crores

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that the total amount allegedly embezzled through various ADAG group companies is approximately Rs 40 thousand crore. Citing the ED affidavit, the bench said that the debts of Reliance Communications are more than Rs 40,000 crore and the investigating agency has estimated the proceeds of crime at more than Rs 20,000 crore.

Assets worth Rs 8,078 crore already seized – ED

ED said that assets worth Rs 8,078 crore have already been provisionally seized. Criticizing the attitude of the CBI, the bench said the agency registered only one FIR in 2025 based on a complaint by State Bank of India despite receiving complaints from several other financial institutions.

The attitude of CBI does not seem to be in accordance with procedural law. Each bank has complained about a separate transaction and a separate FIR is required to be filed.
