Rana Amresh Singh, Ara. After the announcement of promotion of fisheries, production and marketing in the budget of Bihar, fish business in Bhojpur district is going to get a new direction.

In Bhojpur district, which is blessed with half a dozen small rivers and hundreds of ponds along with Ganga and Son rivers, till now the fishermen were not able to get fair price for their fish due to lack of market and storage.

To solve this problem, four retail fish outlets of 'Fish Catch Bihar' brand will be opened in Ara Municipal Corporation area and one each in Municipal Council area.

These outlets will be developed on the lines of Sudha Booth. The proposed locations include Syndicate, Dhobighatwa and Nawada area, where there are plans to open outlets at two places each.

15×15 square feet land will be required for setting up the fish outlet. For this, a letter has been sent to the District Magistrate, Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council. The process at the administrative level is in the final stages and the No Objection Certificate is expected to be received soon.

Fish of the district, for the people of the district

Only local fish produced in Bhojpur district will be made available at these outlets. It will be operated through the corporation or federation of the fisheries department. With this, common consumers will be able to get fresh, clean and quality fish at one place.

District Fisheries Officer Amarjeet Kumar said that this scheme is being implemented under Seven Nishchay-3. A letter has been issued by the Dairy Mother and Animal Husbandry Department regarding opening of retail fish market, in which special emphasis has been laid on dairy and fisheries for agricultural progress and prosperity of the state.

More than 200 species of fish in the district

Bhojpur district is quite rich in terms of fish production. Many rare and endangered species like Sonbachwa, Tengar, Desi Bangur are found here. About 200 types of fish are available in Son river alone.

In the financial year 2025-26, about 18 thousand metric tons of fish was produced in the district, while a target has been set to increase it to 29 thousand metric tons in 2026-27.

More than 19 thousand fishermen joined

Matsyajeevi Sahayog Samitis are active in all the 14 blocks of the district, with which about 19 thousand members are directly associated. Even indirectly, a large population depends on this business.

Dr. Anwar Imam, Head of the Economics Department of Veer Kunwar Singh University, says that this scheme will strengthen the economy of Bhojpur district. The fish here are sent to cities like Patna, Ranchi and Hazaribagh.

Ajay Kumar Tiwari says that getting fresh and disease free fish at one place will provide great relief to consumers and unemployed youth will get employment opportunities.

At the same time, Satish Rai believes that by creating an organized and clean fish market, the environment will also be safe and the vendors will not have to set up shops on the roadside.
