Efforts to reach consensus on Donetsk issue in Abu Dhabi (Photo-X)
Reuters, Moscow. US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky gave confident statements in Davos on Thursday regarding the end of the Ukraine war. But the situation changed within 24 hours. Ukraine is expressing reluctance to give up the remaining 20 percent of its land in Donetsk province, while Russia wants the entire Donetsk province along with Luhansk province.
Officials of Russia, Ukraine and America are meeting on Friday in UAE capital Abu Dhabi to reach a consensus on this matter. This meeting will last for two days.
Russia has captured almost all of Luhansk province in eastern Ukraine in a nearly four-year war. Russia has also captured 80 percent of its neighboring Donetsk province and soldiers of both the countries are fighting over the remaining part.
To stop the war, Russia has set a condition for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the remaining part of Donetsk. There has been a deadlock between the two countries regarding this for the last several months. Due to this, the talks mediated by America are far from fruitful.
Meanwhile, Zelensky has said that the draft of security guarantees to Ukraine after the war stops is ready, only it is yet to be signed by President Trump. This means that after the end of the war, Ukraine will get security guarantees from America, but the situation regarding the deployment of American troops in Ukraine is not yet clear. This point is important because Russia is strongly opposed to the deployment of foreign troops in Ukraine.
The distance between America and Europe on the Greenland issue is also a cause of trouble for war-torn Ukraine. Trump is also not willing to provide free help to Ukraine from America's side. In such a situation, Ukraine feels that further war with Russia will be difficult for it.
The sooner an agreement is reached through Trump's mediation, the better. This will also provide security guarantee to America. But giving up its territory in Donetsk still remains a difficult decision for Ukraine.
Zelensky has said that on Friday and Saturday, officials of the three countries will sit in Abu Dhabi and try to reach a consensus in this regard. During the Ukraine war, officials of the three countries are sitting together and discussing for the first time.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that Russia's control over Donbass (Luhansk and Donetsk) is a very important condition for ending the war. But there are also indications of an agreement between the two countries regarding the currently occupied places with certain conditions.
It is noteworthy that in the war that has been going on since February 2022, Russia has captured Luhansk, Donetsk as well as parts of Kherson and Zaporizhia. Russia has also announced to include them in the national federal system by holding a referendum in parts of these four provinces.
