Digital Desk, Washington. US President Donald Trump announced in a lengthy post on Truth Social on Saturday that a 10 per cent tariff would be imposed on eight European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom (UK), the Netherlands and Finland, unless an agreement is reached for the US's "full and complete purchase" of Greenland. This tariff will come into effect from 1 February 2026 and if no agreement is reached, it will be increased to 25% from 1 June 2026.

Trump claimed that these countries are hindering America's plans by increasing military presence in Greenland. He wrote, "China and Russia want Greenland, and Denmark can't do anything. All they have now are two dog sleds for protection." Trump linked it to national security and world peace, and said the US has given subsidies to these countries for years without imposing tariffs.

The announcement is part of Trump's long-standing ambition to buy Greenland, which he says is essential because of its mineral resources and strategic importance in the Arctic. He has argued for protecting it from the influence of China and Russia.

Denmark and Greenland have repeatedly rejected this proposal. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said this was "not possible" and would violate international rules. Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen made it clear that if he had to choose, he would choose Denmark, NATO and the European Union, not the United States.

Thousands of people held "Hands Off Greenland" demonstrations in Copenhagen and Nuuk (Greenland) on Saturday. Protesters carried banners with slogans such as "Greenland is not going to be sold", "We will decide our own future" and "Greenland is already great". Many protesters wore hats reading "Make America Go Away".

The reaction from European leaders was sharp. Britain's opposition leader Kami Badenoch described it as "completely wrong". France's Armed Forces Minister Alice Ruffo described the European military presence as a sign of defense of sovereignty. Several NATO countries have sent military personnel to Greenland, done at the request of Denmark.

The White House says European military activities will not affect Trump's plans. A bipartisan delegation from the US Congress visited Copenhagen to express support for Denmark and Greenland.

Denmark's foreign minister on Thursday rejected the possibility of a US takeover of Greenland. Earlier, the White House had said that the European military operation on the Arctic island will have no impact on Donald Trump's regional ambitions.

Lars Løkke Rasmussen said, "It is simply not possible. Both Denmark and Greenland do not talk about such an acquisition and it is against all international rules. It is a violation of sovereignty."

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Fredrik Nielsen said Tuesday that "If we had to choose between the United States and Denmark right here and now, we would choose Denmark. We would choose NATO. We would choose the Kingdom of Denmark. We would choose the European Union."
