Hearing in Supreme Court on the custody of Sonam Wangchuk
Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday the petition filed by jailed Sonam Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali J Angmo against her detention under the National Security Act. The case is likely to be heard by a bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and P B Varale.
On January 29, Wangchuk, lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail, denied allegations that he had made statements calling for an Arab Spring-like overthrow of the government. He stressed that it was his democratic right to criticize and protest.
Detention violates fundamental rights
After complaining of stomach problems due to contamination of water, the police had also directed Wangchuk to get his medical examination done by a specialist doctor. The Angamo claim that the detention is illegal and arbitrary, violating their fundamental rights. (With inputs from news agency PTI)
