Law correspondent, Jagran, Prayagraj. The Allahabad High Court has sought information about lawyers who do not practice active law, do other work and are accused under the Gang Bandh Act. A single bench of Justice Vinod Diwakar, while hearing the petition of Etawah resident advocate Mohammad Kafeel, directed the police commissioners, senior superintendents of police and superintendents of police of the respective districts to personally monitor the process and ensure that the information given by the police station incharges is free from any influence, pressure or external factors.
The court also took on record the letter of UP Bar Council advocate Ashok Kumar Tiwari, in which it has been said that the License of Practice (LOP) of those lawyers whose history sheet is open or who are registered as gangsters will be suspended. It was also informed by the council that it has taken suo motu cognizance against 98 such lawyers and disciplinary action is pending against 23. At present a total of 5,14,439 advocates are registered and out of these, Certificate of Practice (COP) has been issued to 2,49,809.
Only these are eligible to practice law and vote in the upcoming Bar Council elections. During COP verification, registrations of 105 advocates were found to be fake. It has also been clarified that no police verification was conducted during the COP verification as it was not required.

The court also asked the state government to file a supplementary affidavit giving the information along with the number of criminal cases against the advocates along with complete details including FIR number, sections of the law, date of registration of the case and the concerned police station.
Let us tell you that in the affidavit given earlier, the state government had said that 3139 criminal cases are registered against 2539 lawyers in different districts. The court has ordered the Registrar of Firms, Societies and Chits, Lucknow, to provide information about the societies registered by lawyers within two weeks.
Clarified that 'societies registered by lawyers' means societies registered by a group of lawyers practicing in District Courts or Tehsil Courts for professional matters, welfare and other ancillary purposes and not for personal gain or other purposes.
