Digital Desk, New Delhi. A statement given by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman on relations with India has gone viral on social media.

In fact, a journalist asked what kind of relations Bangladesh would have with India if Jamaat comes to power? In response, the Jamaat chief points to the green, flashing lights and says, "Can you see how colorful it is when it comes to relations with India." Saying this he walks away laughing.

What is the meaning of this comment?

However, this comment is mysterious. This is believed to be a realization within the Jamaat that the pro-Pakistan and anti-India stance has not worked in the interest of Bangladesh.

Relations with India have deteriorated after the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Rehman's comment is perhaps the first indication that Jamaat is ready to build better relations with India.

However, Jamaat has often targeted India for allowing Hasina to live there and many Jamaat sympathizers have often talked about targeting India's north-east.

But in recent times, the top leadership of Jamaat has reduced its rhetoric a bit. Shafiqur Rehman had earlier claimed that an Indian diplomat had met him in December 2025.

Emphasis on improving relations in election manifesto

In its manifesto for the upcoming elections, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called for peaceful and cooperative relations with neighboring countries including India, Bhutan, Nepal, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Thailand on the basis of mutual respect and fairness.

Jamaat is a pro-Pakistan, fundamentalist Islamic organization. In the past, the party has been known for its anti-India stance and many of its leaders or associates have made anti-India statements. However, the Jamaat has in recent times tried to improve its image by increasing its rapport with Hindus.

It has also fielded a Hindu candidate in the Hindu-dominated constituency. India has repeatedly raised the issue of atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
