The state's multi superspeciality hospital IGIMS has been honored with the Excellence Award by the Department of Health Research (DHR) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday. It has been given for the Multidisciplinary Research Unit (MRU) formed for research, education and discovery of new treatment techniques.
Students or faculty members of any department can do research in this unit. Dr. Namrata Kumari, Head of the Department of Microbiology at the institute, received this award from Union Minister of State for Health Anupriya Patel and Dr. Rajeev Bahl, Director General cum Secretary, Department of Health Research, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in a ceremony organized in New Delhi.
Dr. Namrata is also the nodal officer of the Multidisciplinary Research Unit of the institute. Under the Medical College Research Connect 2026, an annual review of 123 medical colleges of the country was conducted. Out of these, eight institutes got 10 out of 10 marks for better research facilities and environment. IGIMS is the only institute in the state to receive the MRU Excellence Award.
Research opportunities and facilities increased in the institute
Director of the institute, Dr. Binde Kumar said that in the last three years, many initiatives have been taken to encourage research at MBBS, PG and faculty level. In the recent Board of Governors meeting, it has been decided to provide financial assistance up to a maximum of Rs 5 lakh to such research proposals which can be taken to the international platform or which lead to qualitative improvement in clinical technology.
MRU getting the honor under the Medical College Research Connect program means that the institute is getting the recognition and support of the Central Government for research. He congratulated all the teachers and students for this achievement and urged them to move ahead and do new research.
Now the researchers of the institute will get an opportunity to participate in national and international research partnerships, publications and programs. There will also be an opportunity to participate in fellowships, research grants, workshops and training programs, which will provide research experience and skill development at the national level.
MRU will get two scientists, two technicians and data entry operator
Pro. Namrata Kumari said that ICMR promotes research by staying in touch with 123 medical colleges of the country throughout the year and provides marks on the basis of annual review. Under this honour, IGIMS will get both recurring and non-recurring funds. With the non-recurring fund, research infrastructure will be strengthened and necessary equipment will be purchased.
Besides, two scientists, two technicians and one data entry operator will be appointed. Apart from this, a contingency fund of Rs 20 lakh will also be provided. The objective of these facilities is to connect students and faculty members from various courses including MBBS, Post Graduate, Super Specialty (DM-MCh), DNB in research, so as to comprehensively improve the quality of treatment.
