Jagran correspondent, Varanasi. The foundation of cough syrup smuggling was laid four years ago in the year 2022 in Varanasi. At that time barely 500 vials were being sold daily. After this, Shubham Jaiswal of Kayasthan Mohalla of Prahladghat laid the foundation of smuggling along with six associates by making a strategy for non-medical use of cough syrup, after which the sale of cough syrup started reaching beyond lakhs.

When the era of opening bogus firms started to bridge the gap between demand and supply, the members of the gang spread to many states and the economic empire of smuggling crossed Rs 2,000 crore. While fleeing to Nepal, Akash Pathak, Vikas Singh Narve and Ankit Srivastava, who were caught from the Nepal border in Siddharthnagar on Tuesday, confirmed many unconfirmed information already available with the police.

After interrogating the three accused, the Commissionerate's SIT presented them before the court under NDPS section and all of them went behind the bars. Deputy Commissioner of Police Gaurav Banswal has patted the police team on the back. DCP Crime Saravanan T said that Akash Pathak, resident of Siddhamata Lane, Golghar Maidagin, admitted that in the year 2022, the daily sale of cough syrup was 500 vials.

Drug businessman Prashant Upadhyay, Prateek Gujarati of Shilpi Pharma, Manoj Yadav of Syndicate Pharma, Dharmendra Aggarwal of Lokesh Pharma and Shubham Jaiswal along with me (Akash Pathak) laid the foundation of corruption to increase the sales of codeine cough syrup.

When cough syrup vials started selling in lakhs in the initial efforts, Shubham's father Bhola Prasad opened Shaili Traders firm in Ranchi and took the job of central distributorship from the pharmaceutical company, after which bogus firms started being formed through forged documents.

Vikas Singh Narve of Azamgarh and Khwaja Dost of Jaunpur, Ankit Srivastava, a resident of Ramchitra Temple near Ramchitra Temple, along with the kingpin Shubham, started sending fake e-way bills and cough syrup from GST invoices to many states in the country including Bengal and Tripura through drug firms made with forged documents.
