India won the first match.
Sports Desk, New Delhi. In the third match of T20 World Cup 2026, the American cricket team had brought the world number one cricket team India to its knees. Well done to Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, whose unbeaten inning of 84 runs helped India cross the 150-mark. In the last over of his Mumbai cricket partner Saurabh Netrawalkar, Surya hit two fours and two sixes and took the score to 161 runs for 9 wickets. In reply, the US team could score only 132 runs after losing 8 wickets in 20 overs. The Indian team started the World Cup by winning the match by 29 runs. Now India will face Namibia on 10th February. This match will be played at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
America won the toss. Five players in America's team, including captain Monank Patel, are Indians, three of whom have played a lot of cricket in this ground of Mumbai. Keeping this in view, Monank took the brilliant decision of winning the toss and bowling first. Usually, you get good bounce on a red clay pitch, but here the ball was coming to a stop.
There was no fast batting, except Saurabh Netrawalkar, the rest of the American bowlers bowled accurately on target. Captain Monank had also set the fielding very well. The Indian batsmen had come thinking that the ball would bounce and that they would take advantage of this and send it out of the stadium with aggressive batting, but this did not happen.
The ball was coming intermittently and one after another the Indian bowlers were getting caught out near the pitch. Eight out of nine wickets of India were caught out. Varun Chakraborty was run out in the last ball. Six batsmen of the team could not even reach double figures, out of which three did not score even a single run. There was only one captain Suryakumar who learned his lesson and stood firm till the last ball.
Bad start: India expected a good start from Abhishek Sharma (0) but they got a big blow as they were out on zero. At one time, India had scored 45 runs at the loss of one wicket in 5.1 overs, but South African origin Wayne broke the back of the Indian team by taking three wickets in the next five balls and a total of four wickets. The Indian team could score only 46 runs for four wickets in the powerplay. Wayne took the wickets of Ishan Kishan (20), Tilak Verma (25) and Shivam Dubey (0) in that over.
Suryabharat, who remained at one end, scored 86 runs for six wickets in 14 overs. Coach Gautam Gambhir came during the break. He talked to Surya Kumar Yadav and Akshar Patel. After this Surya changed his game. Shubham Ranjane and Harmeet Singh, who once played with Surya on the same ground, also left no stone unturned to trouble the Indian team. Wickets were falling on one side and the sun was shining on the other side.
Reached beyond 160. In the last over, he kept the strike with himself and took the score beyond 160 by scoring 21 runs. Sky played an inning of 84 runs in 49 balls. During this, he hit 10 fours and 4 sixes. Vice-captain Akshar Patel contributed 14 runs. Rinku Singh contributed 6 runs and Hardik Pandya contributed 5 runs. 4 runs came off the bat of fast bowler Arshdeep Singh. Shedley Van Schalkwyk got 4 successes from America's side.
In 2024, America had also given a tough challenge to India in its home T-20 World Cup match. Playing first on the bad pitch of Nassau County, the American team was able to score 110 runs for eight wickets and India needed 18.2 overs to win. Suryakumar Yadav had scored a half-century in this match also.
Apart from Suryakumar Yadav, even though India's batting was poor, the bowlers put pressure on America from the beginning. Arshdeep Singh gave 2 runs in the first over. Mohammad Siraj took advantage of this pressure created by him. Siraj, who came to bowl the second over, got wicketkeeper Andries Goos (6) caught out by Tilak Verma. Arshdeep Singh hunted captain Monank Patel on the first ball of his quota of second and third over of the innings. Monank faced 2 balls and his account was not even opened.
Siraj, who came to bowl his second over, gave another blow to USA. This time Siraj victimized the second opener Saiteja Mukkamalla. Saiteja played 7 balls and scored 2 runs from his bat. US got a partnership after 3 wickets fell. There was a partnership of 58 runs in 52 balls between Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthy. Varun Chakraborty broke this partnership. Wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan played an important role in this wicket. He stumped out Milind (34).
Vice-captain Akshar Patel gave back to back successes to India in the 16th over. On the second ball of the over, he sent back Sanjay Krishnamurthy (37) and Harmeet Singh (0).
