India and Canada will appoint contact officers
Digital Desk, New Delhi. India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Nathalie Drouin, National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada, met on Saturday. During the meeting, it was agreed that each country would appoint security and law-enforcement liaison officers and their respective agencies would further strengthen working relationships.
The appointment of Liaison Officers is expected to streamline bilateral communications and facilitate timely sharing of information on issues of mutual concern. These issues of concern include the illicit flow of drugs such as fentanyl precursors and the activities of transnational organized criminal networks.
Agreed to strengthen working relations
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, in the meeting held on Saturday as part of NSA Doval's two-day visit to Canada, the two countries agreed to further strengthen their working relations.
This was part of the regular bilateral security dialogue between India and Canada, during which both sides noted the progress made on initiatives to ensure the security of their citizens and agreed to a common plan of action for cooperation on national security and law enforcement priorities.
Expressed commitment on cyber security issues
During the discussion, both countries also committed to formalize cooperation on cyber security policy and share information on cyber security issues. They agreed to continue cooperation in matters related to fraud and immigration enforcement in line with domestic laws and international obligations.
The moves are seen as part of efforts by both sides to normalize ties, which had become strained in 2023 following a diplomatic row over the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Apart from meeting Drouin, Doval also spoke with Canada's Public Safety Minister Gary Anandsangari on Friday. Doval's visit to Canada comes at a time when both countries are preparing for the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to India early next month. (With inputs from news agency ANI)
