PTI, New Delhi. The fashion sense of European Commission President Ursula Van der Leyen, who stepped into New Delhi as India's chief guest on Republic Day, has made headlines across the world.

Dressed in Indian fashion designers, Ursula has left a mark of Indian fashion on the global stage with her stunning outfits chosen for public events in Delhi. The EU chief's fashion choices while attending events in India also caught the attention of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).

As the chief guest, European Union (EU) chief Ursula wore a deep red and gold silk brocade turtleneck jacket at the 77th Republic Day celebrations on Monday. As she alighted from the carriage with President Draupadi Murmu, the floral net zari design on her dress sparkled in the golden sunlight.

She wore white pants with an embroidered navy blue top at the prestigious Hyderabad House here on Tuesday when India and the EU signed a historic free trade agreement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also had a check jacket dedicated to the same blue color of the European Union. She had put a light blue shawl over it.

The EU chief's fashion selection was described by the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) as a "proud moment for Indian fashion on the global stage" in an internet media post.

"During her historic visit to India, European Commission President Ursula Van der Leyen was seen wearing creations by renowned Indian designers Rajesh Pratap Singh and Anamika Khanna, which celebrate the depth, dignity and global resonance of Indian design and craftsmanship," FDCI posted on Instagram.

In the post, its president Sunil Sethi described it as a proud moment and said that Laine wore clothes made by Indian designers for this trip. Sethi said their appropriate selection is a recognition of the extraordinary talent of Indian artisans and weavers, whose art speaks to our heritage on the global stage."
