Massive explosion in chemical factory (photo social media)
Digital Desk, New Delhi. Two people were killed and four others seriously injured after a chemical storage tank exploded at a factory near Karkette village in Karnataka. The explosion occurred when the chemical factory was being shifted. Two workers died on the spot. The injured have been admitted to Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences here.
According to police sources, the facility was in the process of shifting its materials from Karkette to the new location for some time and the accident occurred on Sunday when the chemical tank was being cleaned.
Police said the investigation is ongoing. Locals have raised concerns about the factory's safety record, including a toxic gas leak in 2022 that damaged crops in nearby areas and killed two dogs. It also had a negative impact on the health of the people living nearby.
Following protests by farmers and locals and intervention of the local MLA and district administration, the operations of the factory were stopped and hence the owners decided to shift the factory to another location.
