Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. The sessions court at Rouse Avenue has convicted Kashmiri separatist and Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief Asiya Andrabi and others in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case. Additional Sessions Judge Chanderjeet Singh convicted Asiya along with Sophie Fahmida and Nahida Nasreen under sections 18 (punishment for conspiracy) and 38 (offences relating to membership of a terrorist organisation) of the UAPA.

Hearing conducted under tight security

Andrabi and others were present in the court amid tight security in the afternoon for the verdict. The court may pass orders on the punishment period after the hearing on January 17. Under the stringent provisions of UAPA, the punishment for crimes can exceed life imprisonment.

Advocating separation of Jammu and Kashmir from India

According to the FIR, Asiya Andrabi and her associates Sophie Fahmida and Nahida Nasreen are running a terrorist organization named Dukhtaran-e-Millat, which is banned under UAPA.

It has also been alleged that the organization, through Asiya Andrabi, openly advocates the separation of Jammu and Kashmir from India and has also called for jihad and the use of violence against India.

The agency also said that Andrabi and his associates have said, written and published things that breed hatred and contempt towards the Government of India.

Maintain relations with banned organizations

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had accused Andrabi of waging war against India through hate speeches, criminal conspiracy and anti-terrorism activities. The investigating agency said Andrabi and his two associates mobilized support for the separatist cause and had links with banned organisations, which are offenses under the UAPA.

After examining the evidence on record, the trial court found the allegations to be true and ordered Andrabi guilty. Andrabi founded the women's separatist group Dukhtaran-e-Millat in 1987. Andrabi was arrested in April 2018 as part of a large-scale crackdown on separatist networks in Jammu and Kashmir.

The arrest took place in April 2018

Later this organization was banned under UAPA. Andrabi was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir Police in April 2018 for planning mass protests and stone pelting in Anantnag. After this he was sent to jail.
