Digital Desk, New Delhi. Nepal's former king Gyanendra Shah landed at Kathmandu airport on Friday amid tight security. Upon his arrival, hundreds of supporters gathered at the airport demanding the restoration of the monarchy.
Supporters held placards and chanted, “We want the king back to save our nation.” Nepal abolished the monarchy in 2008, but pro-monarchy protests resumed last year amid an economic crisis and political instability.
Gathering of supporters at the airport
Activists of the pro-monarchy Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, led by senior leader Kamal Thapa, and supporters led by Navraj Subedi and doctor Durga Prasai had gathered near the airport since Friday morning. At a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday, Prasai said he wanted to restore the monarchy before general elections in March.
'King come and save the country'
People protesting in support of the monarchy were shouting slogans like “King, come and save the country”. When Gyanendra reached his home in the eastern region of Nepal after a three-month leave, he offered bouquets of flowers and waved the national flag. Sanatan Prasad Regmi, a supporter of Gyanendra, said, “We have to bring back the monarchy because the king can be the caretaker who takes care of all the Nepali people, which many corrupt leaders have failed to do.”
