Digital Desk, New Delhi. Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Sunday launched the country's first open sea fisheries project in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

A senior official of the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) said that seabass and cobia fish are being reared in the open sea, and seaweed cultivation is also being done on experimental basis. Both seabass and cobia are high-value fish known for their superior taste.

India's first step towards promoting blue economy

The minister described the project as the first major step towards promoting India's blue economy. The project is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Earth Sciences, NIOT and Andaman and Nicobar Islands Administration.

What is this pilot initiative focused on?

This pilot initiative focuses on open sea farming of marine fish and algae under natural marine conditions, integrating scientific innovation with livelihood generation. Singh said India's oceans, like the Himalayas and mainland resources, are endowed with immense and diverse economic potential, which has not been given due attention for decades.
