Yogi government's lightning arrester model successful
Digital Desk, Lucknow. Yogi government is continuously taking concrete and scientific steps towards minimizing the loss of life due to natural disasters in the state. Under this, a big step was taken in Mirzapur towards “Lightning Resiliency” i.e. protection from lightning. Due to this step of Yogi government, 50 percent reduction in deaths due to lightning was recorded in Mirzapur, while work is being done to reduce it to minimum and zero. Yogi government's Lightning Resiliency Model has emerged as a model for the country. Let us tell you that Mirzapur is one of the most power affected areas of the country.
Strengthened through training and awareness campaign
District Disaster Management Authority Mirzapur (DDMA) Chairman/District Magistrate Mirzapur Pawan Kumar Gangwar said that after assuming power, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had given instructions to prevent and minimize the deaths due to natural disasters at all costs. In such a situation, as per the intention of CM Yogi, Uttar Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (UPSDMA) was strengthened with modern technology, training and awareness campaigns.
The Lightning Mitigation Project in Mirzapur is a direct example of this. As a result, the number of deaths due to lightning has reduced to 14 in the year 2024-25 and 2025-26, whereas in the year 2019, 30 people died due to lightning, 28 in the year 2020, 23 in the year 2021 and 30 in the year 2022.
'Lightning hotspots' identified after scientific study
Mirzapur has been a very sensitive district from the point of view of lightning due to its geographical structure, rocky land and mining operations. In the last few years, many people have lost their lives due to lightning. Yogi government took cognizance of the matter and directed the concerned officials to take necessary steps. On this, an in-depth analysis of the data of the last four to five years was done by DDMA Mirzapur.
According to the project assessment of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), ground data of lightning falls from IITM Pune, research done by the scholars of IIT Roorkee and the sensitivity assessment of the district from the perspective of lightning done by CROPC, it was found that most of the deaths occur in open fields, under trees, near water sources and in kutcha houses. After the study, a lightning hotspot map was prepared in Mirzapur, on the basis of which security measures were decided.
On the basis of lightning hotspot map, early streamer emission lightning arresters were installed at 80 places. In the first phase, on the basis of lightning hotspot map, early streamer emission (EOSOE) based lightning arresters were installed at 80 places in the identified sensitive areas of Mirzapur. Let us tell you that these devices conduct electricity safely into the earth, thereby preventing any loss of life or property in the surrounding area. Many arresters have indicators indicating that they have successfully absorbed electricity a number of times.
Thunderstorm safety program conducted in the entire district
Yogi government's strategy was not limited to technology alone but extensive training programs were organized at the block, district and gram panchayat level. Under the 'Lightning Safety Programme', officials, village heads, accountants, Anganwadi workers, youth and common citizens were also given information about what to do and what not to do during lightning. Along with this, training was also given to receive timely warning through ‘Damini’ mobile app.
Not only this, the message was conveyed to all 809 gram panchayats of Mirzapur through miking, awareness chariots, posters, videos and panchayat level workshops. Videos based on protection from electricity were also shown in cinema halls. The warnings issued by IMD were quickly conveyed to the general public through social media and WhatsApp groups. It is the result of these efforts of the Yogi government that at present the number of deaths due to lightning in Mirzapur has reduced by 50 percent, while work is being done to reduce it to zero.
