Ayushman Pandey, Lucknow: The Police Commissionerate has taken an important initiative to get rid of the increasing traffic pressure and jams at intersections in the capital. Now all the traffic signals including the major intersections of the city will be operated on the basis of Artificial Intelligence (AI). After the implementation of this modern system, the traffic signals will turn green and red automatically, not at the fixed time, but based on the number of vehicles and pressure on the road. High-resolution cameras and sensors will be installed in the AI-based traffic system. This equipment will assess the number of vehicles coming and going at the intersections, their speed and the length of the queue in the lane. After this the software will automatically decide for how long green signal should be given to vehicles coming from which direction. On one hand this will end unnecessary waiting, on the other hand the traffic will keep moving.
A big feature of this project is that it is being linked to Google Map. As soon as there is a traffic jam on any route, the AI system will update that information in real time. Based on this, Google will implement diversion of that route on the map on the instructions of higher officials. Then the drivers will be able to immediately get information about alternative routes and they will be able to avoid getting stuck in the jam.
The system will be implemented after success at some intersections
This scheme will be implemented in a phased manner. Under the first pilot project, AI signals will be installed at some major intersections. After successful testing it will be expanded to the entire city. Traffic police personnel will also be given training to operate and monitor this new technology, so that in case of any technical problem, it can be resolved immediately.
If pollution will be less then AQI will also be better.
Experts say that this system will not only save time but will also reduce fuel consumption. Pollution caused by frequent stopping at signals and getting stuck in traffic will also be curbed. This system can prove to be very effective especially at intersections where there is heavy pressure during office hours and school-college holidays.
relief to the general public
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic and Crime, Kamlesh Dixit said that after the implementation of this system, the general public will get relief. Also, there will be no accumulation of vehicles at intersections. Also, once the diversion is implemented, people traveling will be able to get immediate information with the help of Google Map. This system will be implemented soon.
