After better connectivity from Meerut to Delhi, now it is the turn of beautification of intersections.
Know the main points and gist of the news at a glance
Jagran correspondent, Meerut. With the operation of Namo Bharat and Meerut Metro, Delhi has become extremely accessible with better connectivity, but the traffic system within the city is still congested and unsafe.
People coming after a pleasant journey at high speed are getting stuck in traffic jams at intersections. This problem may increase further when people from outside districts including Delhi, Noida, Gurugram come to Meerut.
This problem may become acute with the increase in feeder services. In view of this, administrative officials have started brainstorming to create a traffic control and jam-free system. In this series, preparations are being made to connect all the intersections missing from the signal system under the control of ITMS (Integrated Traffic Management System).
Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami has asked Meda, Municipal Corporation and Traffic Department to make a comprehensive proposal to cover all the intersections under the ITMS scheme and submit it soon. Under the scheme, all intersections will be equipped with 360 degree rotating hi-tech wireless cameras.
10 to 15 cameras can be installed at each intersection. It will be ensured that the cameras are not limited to the intersection only, but also keep an eye on all the routes connected to it.
With the help of cameras, sitting in the control room, the traffic police will not only be able to control the traffic situation by seeing it in real time, but will also be able to issue e-challans to those who violate traffic rules. Apart from this, criminal incidents can also be controlled.
MEDA has prepared a list of 75 intersections. Wireless technology cameras can be installed even in those places where laying cables is difficult. This will also get rid of the problem of wiring fault.
Some of these cameras will have face detection technology, which will be able to identify wanted criminals even in the crowd. Due to night vision capability, these cameras will be able to record clear pictures even in the dark of night.
These will also have the facility of backup in case of power cut. The data from these cameras will be directly linked to the police database to track suspicious activities and movement of criminals.
60 percent of the city was left out of ITMS
Till now, under the signal system, traffic movement at the intersections of the city is taking place only at Tejgarhi intersection, Diggi Tiraha, L Block Tiraha, Bachha Park intersection, Gandhibagh intersection, Hapur Adda, Jailchungi and Commissioner's residence intersection.
About 60 percent area of the city is left out of the Integrated Traffic Management System, which includes Madhav Chowk, Begumpul, Railway Road Crossing, Football Crossing, Shopricks Mall Crossing, Bijli Bamba Bypass Crossing, Saket Imli Crossing, Circuit House Crossing, Mawana Road Crossing, Ganganagar Tirha, Kaserubaxar Crossing, Kankarkheda Shiv Chowk Crossing, Several major intersections are included including Tipi Nagar Tiraha. At these intersections, traffic police constables are controlling the traffic in the old manner.
48 crores have been received, more than 100 crores are needed
The Municipal Corporation has received Rs 48 crore from the government for the expansion of the ITMS scheme, but the dilemma of the officials is that the expenditure on integrating all the intersections of the city is estimated to be more than Rs 100 crore. In such a situation, discussion is going on on two options.
Firstly, some intersections should be covered with the money received. Funds should be sought from the government for the remaining intersections. Another option is to work together by asking for a lump sum amount of money for all the intersections. Both types of proposals will be prepared and sent to the government.
With the operation of Namo Bharat Metro, the city's traffic will become faster. In such a situation, there is a plan to expand ITMS to provide smooth and safe transportation.
Work is underway on a plan to equip every intersection of the city with signal system and wireless cameras. MEDA, Traffic Police and Municipal Corporation, all three are working together.-Pramod Kumar Singh, Chief Engineer Municipal Corporation.
