Murshidabad Violence: 'Calcutta High Court Will Decide On UAPA' Supreme Court Orders NIA

Supreme Court directs NIA to explain UAPA justification

State Bureau, Kolkata. The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the NIA to file a report in a sealed cover in the Calcutta High Court justifying the use of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), which has stringent provisions related to terrorism, in the case related to the violence and unrest in Bengal's Murshidabad district. Disposing of the Bengal government's appeal, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Jaimalya Bagchi asked the state government to approach the high court with its complaints against the NIA investigation in the Murshidabad violence case.

The top court said that the Calcutta High Court can also examine the challenge given by the state government to the Centre's decision to order an NIA investigation in this case. On January 28, the Union Home Ministry had ordered an NIA investigation into this matter.

On January 16, there was two-day violence in Beldanga in Murshidabad district against alleged attacks on migrant workers in the neighboring states of Bihar and Jharkhand. In this violence, the miscreants caused vandalism and blocked National Highway-12.
