Jagran correspondent, Basti. Trains not arriving on time has become a common problem in the country, but when this matter was raised in the Consumer Commission, the Railways had to suffer the consequences.

District Consumer Commission Chairman Justice Amarjeet Verma and member Ajay Prakash Singh have imposed a fine of Rs 9 lakh on the Railways for missing the examination of a student. Apart from this, Railways has also been instructed to give Rs 10,000 for other items.

Samriddhi Singh of local Gandhinagar Pikaura Baksh Mohalla, who is a student, had filed a suit in the District Consumer Commission through her advocate Prabhakar Mishra.

Samriddhi had bought an intercity superfast train ticket from Basti for Rs 190 to appear for the examination at Jayanarayan PG College, Lucknow on May 7, 2018. He had to report at the examination center at 12:30, while the scheduled time of the train was 11:00 at Charbagh.

However, the train arrived at 1:34 pm, due to which Samriddhi was unable to appear for the exam and her year's studies were ruined. He sent notices to the Railway Ministry, General Manager Railways and Station Superintendent, but after not receiving any reply, filed a case in the court on 11 September 2018.

The case continued for more than seven years. The Commission heard both the parties and the Railways accepted the delay of the train, but did not clarify the reason for the delay. The Commission has directed the Railways to pay Rs 9,10,000 within 45 days. If payment is not made on time, 12 percent interest will have to be paid.
