Climate change, no ice in Zanskar river, Chadar track cancelled.
State Bureau, Jammu. Chadar Track will not be organized on Zanskar River in Ladakh this year. The administration has taken this decision after the water of Zanskar river did not freeze even in the second fortnight of January. Leh district administration has issued an order to cancel the Chadar track.
It is believed that due to climate change for the last few years, ice is not freezing in the Zanskar River in the stipulated time. The district administration directed local tour and travel operators to cancel trekking related activities on the Zanskar River. This time there is danger. There is no ice in the river, hence organizing trekking activities is not possible.
Tourists and trekkers have also been instructed to follow the instructions not to trek in the Zanskar River. Due to this order of the administration, local tour and travel operators planning trekking activities in Zanskar river with tourists are disappointed.
This time a joint team of Ladakh Police, Disaster Response Force, Wildlife, Tourism Department officials along with representatives of All Ladakh Tour Operators Association had conducted a recce of Zanskar River twice. There was no ice in the river in the second fortnight of January. There is only two to three feet of snow at some places on the banks of Zanskar River.
Both the times, the tracking team had made it clear in its report to the district administration that trekking on the Zanskar river is unsafe. The team doing the recce for the second time had decided to inspect the Zanskar river in a few days. But even before this the administration decided to cancel the tracking.
Considering the increase in temperature in Ladakh, it became clear that trekking on Zanskar River will no longer be possible. The temperature starts increasing in Ladakh in the month of February. All Ladakh Tour Operators Association official Chhiwang Namgyal said that many tourists were determined to come to the Chadar Track.
We also had expectations from it. But this time the weather was not suitable for the sheet track. Under normal circumstances, Chadar track would start as soon as the second fortnight of January begins. Even in the last days of January, before Zanskar did not freeze, it seemed that organizing the track would not be possible.
In Ladakh, the process of tourists coming for Chadar Track on the frozen Zanskar River started in the year 1994. The number of tourists visiting Chadar Track has increased in the last few years. Even at this time, some tourists from other parts of the country have reached Leh to participate in the Chadar Trek. In the current situation, there is no possibility of organizing this track till the end of January.
