When these diseases cannot be controlled despite long-term medications, exercise and dietary changes, bariatric and metabolic surgery is emerging as an effective treatment option.
Doctors of the Surgery Department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi claimed that this surgery is becoming a new hope for the patients struggling with obesity and diabetes for years.
Patient support group meeting organized
A patient support group meeting was organized on Sunday for patients undergoing bariatric and metabolic surgery at Unit-II, Department of Surgery, AIIMS. Dr. Faggan Singh Kulaste was also present as a beneficiary patient in this academic and patient-centric program.
The objective of the program was to share experiences related to surgery and resolve the doubts of the patients. Senior surgeon of AIIMS, Additional Prof. Dr. Manjunath said that when obesity and type-two diabetes are not controlled for a long time and medicines do not have any effect, then metabolic surgery plays an important role.

It is claimed that in many patients 15 to 20 years old diabetes and obesity has been treated successfully after about two hours of surgery. After this surgery, there are positive changes in the metabolism of the body, which helps in controlling blood sugar and it becomes normal.
Dr. Manjunath said that this surgery is not limited to weight loss only, but also affects hormonal and metabolic levels. For this reason it is called metabolic surgery. He clarified that this treatment is adopted when medicines, exercise and changes in diet do not provide the expected benefits.
Bariatric Surgery Not a Beauty Treatment
Dr. Rajendra Kumar of AIIMS, present in the program, stressed the need for pre and post surgery precautions, nutritional management and regular follow up. It is said that selection of the right patient and treatment by an expert team is the key to the success of the surgery. Cautioned that bariatric and metabolic surgery is not a cosmetic treatment, but a serious medical procedure, which should be undertaken only after expert advice and thorough examination.
On this occasion, MP Faggan Singh Kulaste, who had benefited from the surgery, shared his experience and said that he himself had undergone metabolic surgery at AIIMS and after that there was a significant improvement in his health. Praising the efforts of AIIMS doctors, he said that this treatment can give a new direction to the lives of many patients.
