Jagran correspondent, Greater Noida. The court of Additional Sessions Judge/Quick Court II Judge Priyanka Singh has sentenced Sonu, resident of Panapur village, police station Panapur district, Chapra Bihar, who raped a mentally ill girl, to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50 thousand. If the fine is not deposited, the convict will have to face additional imprisonment of two months.
Assistant District Government Advocate (Criminal) Shilpi Bhadauria said that the incident took place on July 30, 2023 in a slum under Sector-113 Kotwali area. The victim's mother said in the statement that while she was returning from work, a child called her to the slum. When she reached inside, the accused was doing wrong things with her 20-year-old daughter.
The mother, along with the neighbor who arrived after raising the alarm, saved the victim. During this time the accused fled from the spot. On the complaint of the victim's mother, the police registered a case and arrested the accused from Sector-113 Kotwali area and sent him to judicial custody. The police had sent the victim's samples to the Forensic Science Laboratory for medical and DNA testing.
After hearing the arguments of both the parties, the court said that the victim is a mentally ill girl. Taking advantage of her helpless condition, the accused raped her. The rape committed by the accused comes within the ambit of Section 376 (2) of the Indian Penal Code. The court found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 14 years imprisonment. After the accused pays the fine, the entire amount will be given to the victim as compensation.
The court said that considering the age, condition of the victim and the nature of the crime, a fine of Rs 50,000 does not appear to be adequate as compensation. Therefore, it has been recommended to give compensation to the victim as per rules under the compensation scheme. A copy of the order has been sent to the Secretary, District Legal Services Authority.
Bail plea of accused in rape case rejected
On the other hand, the POCSO court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Sahil Mangal alias Sahil, accused of raping a minor. A case was registered against the accused in Jewar police station. On the night of 12 November 2025, the complainant's daughter had gone away from home without informing him. When the daughter was not found even after a search, an appeal was made to the police.
The police had registered a case against the accused after investigation. The advocate of the accused said that the victim has not been recovered from the possession of the accused. The case was registered with a delay of three days, but no explanation was given. The court, after seeing the case diary and other documents, refused to grant bail to the accused.
